Strategy Tips for Online Baccarat
Baccarat (pronounced “Bah-Ka-Rah”) is one of those casino games that looks quite complex, but it is actually very simple to play. Not only is the game easy to learn, it offers one of the lowest house edges among casino games. Online baccarat is an appealing option for casino players, since it allows them to enjoy baccarat without dressing up and building up a huge bankroll in order to access the live casino’s exclusive-looking “baccarat pit.”
While much of the play of baccarat is pre-determined, there are a few strategy ideas to remember while playing this game that was formerly the province of high rollers alone.
Basic Strategy Ideas in Online Baccarat
Since there is an optimal strategy in baccarat, the play of the hands is essentially automatic. The only choice you will make is whether to bet on yourself (“the player”) or the dealer (“the banker”). The banker’s hand has a very minimal edge over the player hand. However, winning banker bets must pay a five percent commission to the house, so it comes out roughly even. However, since the edge is so small, many players choose a “loss-cutting” strategy. That is, when they get on a winning streak, they stay and play until it is apparent that the streak is over, but as soon as a losing streak becomes obvious, they quit before it can get out of hand. While there is no long-term statistical advantage to such a strategy, it does allow a player to amass a potentially large win in a single session while minimizing the likelihood of a devastating loss.
Another option is a progressive strategy. If you win twice in a row, increase your bet by half a unit. Keep following this strategy until you lose, then start over. Such a strategy allows you to maximize the benefit of winning streaks.
Other Strategy Ideas in Online Baccarat
Avoid betting on the tie. While most baccarat bets are low house edge bets, the tie bet favors the house in a big way, to the tune of 14.36 percent. Don’t worry that you cannot deviate from the house strategy. There is truly no other way to maximize your chance of winning than by hitting or standing according to the house rules. Additionally, since you are allowed to bet on either player or banker, being able to alter the point totals would give you an unfair advantage since you could intentionally hit or stand to weaken the player hand. Good luck!
