So You Want To Influence The World?
Don't like a law or policy passed by legislature? Get your voice heard by writing a political letter to a politician or news editor. To be sure you are taken seriously, follow these tips:
1. Business Letter Generator - Visit this site to create a properly formatted letter – type your info into the boxes, then download the piece to your word processor software to edit, save, and print.
2. Address: Research to be sure you're sending your letter to the right office / person. You can usually find this online at the website of the party you wish to reach.
3. Topic: Be sure your intent is clear up front by naming your topic right off the bat, either in an RE: (regarding) or in the first sentence of your letter.
4. Organization:
1st paragraph - State why you are writing. Be brief.
2nd paragraph – List key talking points. Include any personal experiences or observations that will make your letter stand out.
3rd or Last Paragraph – Close by politely reminding the reader what you want (change in policy, vote yes/no on a particular bill, etc.)
5. Tone: Always be polite – the point is not to rant, but to be convincing and thoughtful. Don't make inflammatory statements or use rude language. Make sure any facts you include have been verified.
6. Layout: Make your letter pleasing to the eye – use white space by having 1” margins and a space between paragraphs. Also, run the spell checker and read over your letter before sending. You want to make a good impression!
Now go on and send your words out into the world! Your words can make a difference!
