Last night there was major gas explosion in San Bruno, CA. At approximately 6:15pm PST, the rupture of a 24-inch gas pipe occurred, resulting in a 60-100 foot high fireball. One witness reported that she initially felt something that felt an earthquake, which was followed by a loud rumbling sound: “It sounded like a training running right outside my door.” When she looked out, she saw the flaming plume.

At least a dozen homes were impacted by the blast according to initial reports. It took approximately an hour before PG&E was able to get the gas turned off. Water dropping helicopters began dropping about 35-45 minutes after the explosion

Initial reports mentioned the possibility of a plane down, but those were found to be without merit. Four different area hospitals have reported receiving victims.

The fire started in the middle of the neighborhood and then spread out from there. This portion of San Bruno is very hilly, and right in between two freeways. Roads into the area have been shut down. The fire crews are dealing with windy conditions gusting between 20-30 miles an hour.
