Losing More Than A Bus Pass

A year ago I had been on a bus in my home city about once in the last ten years. Now I am quite a proficient bus traveler, but very soon I have to hand back my monthly bus pass as it is no longer economically viable. I no longer have to make the journey each morning to the other side of Edinburgh to attend my Masters course as I am very nearly, just about to graduate!

So the bus pass has to go. But I have used it to its full in the last twelve months. I am now a balanced person who can get on the bus and go upstairs (we have double-decker buses here) without falling over. I can arrange myself sufficiently well to take my iPod with me to listen to, and I can remember to carry any books I need to amuse me on the journey. I also have time to read the Metro which is the free newspaper and after some tuition, I have mastered the art of completing the Sudoku during the journey.

So I am going to miss the bus, but I may use it occasionally to get to the library, which is one of my favoured places to sit and write. However I will feel like a second class citizen as I will no longer have my pass with the photo on it. Instead I will have to buy a day ticket and offer up this scrappy little piece of paper rather than my lovely plastic card (with my photo on it). And I have to wonder if, when I go back to the Bus Company office, they might take away my lovely bus pass (with my photo on it). If they do then what will happen to it? Or will they just disable it and leave me with a useless piece of plastic (with my photo on it!).
