ABC Captures Religious Profiling
We are the greatest nation on earth, but are we the greatest people?
Here is a video from Texas that might shame you if you are a proud American. In this video a man in a bakery refuses to sell a woman apple strudel because she is Muslim.
He says, “We don't serve Muslims here.”
The lady exclaims, “I am sorry!”
“This is America, we are at war with your people,” the man shouts back. He accuses her of being a terrorist and hurls further insults at her.
The woman asks another shopper if he would buy apple strudel for her and she would pay him. The shopkeeper overhears and refuses to sell to the other shopper.
The reality is this incident is staged by ABC News. The shopkeeper and the woman both are actors. It is the reaction from the other shoppers that is of concern here. When pressed by ABC the man meekly says that he thinks the seller has right to refuse her. Reaction from other shoppers is even more astounding; one person says that he too would not serve a Muslim. Another gives the seller thumbs up for his stand and when approached by the ABC reporter calls him UN-American.
For many Muslim women, their daily lives in the US are battles; they are taunted, ridiculed and at times physically attacked.
What saves the day for me however is later part of this video, where people walk out of the store in protest supporting the woman. One man says that the shopkeeper is not American, and he knows what a real American should be for his son just returned from Iraq serving for over a year in the army. He leaves the store threatening to suggest people to boycott the bakery.
And finally, two women stand their ground in defending the Muslim woman and demand to see the store Manager. One woman breaks up in tears describing the inequitable behavior of the sales person to the ABC reporter.
At the final count 13 people defended the Muslim woman, 6 were against her, and 22 remained silent.
It is this silent majority because of whom the racial hatred perpetuates in this country. The silence only strengthens the hands of injustice.
