USA Network Covert Affairs - Week 6 Recap
It is week six of USA Network's Covert Affairs with an emphasis on affairs. On the home front, Annie catches her brother-in-law coming out of hotels in Washington, D.C. when he's supposed to be in Baltimore.
Professionally she's assigned to spy on U.S. Senator Gil Jarvis, Chairman of the National Intelligence Committee. Joan announced three CIA missions in the past two weeks were compromised — the source of the leak is narrowed down to his committee.
Annie enters Jarvis' office on the pretense of changing out the artwork on behalf of the Smithsonian. While in the office, she discovers the Senator and his Chief of Staff are having an affair. Further digging uncovers that the newest girlfriend is just the latest in a long line, and the wife has had enough.
So Jarvis' wife turns to espionage as a way to discredit her husband, get rid of the girlfriend and bring him back home to live the life they used to live. In Joan's words, "That's not a marriage, that's a honeymoon."
Annie gets close to Ashley, the Chief of Staff, in order to unravel the leak. Personally, I didn't need the catty high school girl conversation over drinks between Annie and Ashley about the Senator's affair.
I don't know why, but I'm really annoyed that Joan apparently only has one dress, although it comes in at least four different colors. I guess I shouldn't have watched eight episodes back-to-back.
The series subplots advance as Jai flirts with Annie, asking her out for drinks after work. They often look across the room and smile at each other. We begin to see Auggie as a "player." Annie confronts him as they both come into work, asking him if he thought no one would notice he's wearing the same clothes as the day before.
Meanwhile, Auggie is loaned to another department to help coordinate a mission with his old team. This mission happens to be one that is compromised by the senator's wife, but Auggie is able to save the day. Our insight this week is that Joan, while appearing to be "take no prisoners" tough, actually has a soft spot and allowed Auggie to complete the mission even though she wanted to take him back from her inter-agency loan.
By the way, Annie's brother-in-law actually lost his job and was trying to hide it from his family.
USA Network's Covert Affairs is on Tuesdays at 10/9c. Only four episodes left this season.
