Rapper Guru in Coma After Suffering Heart Attack
Famed hip-hop artist Guru, one half of the pioneering group GangStarr, is in a coma after suffering a heart attack, according to reports.
The 43-year-old Guru, whose real name is Keith Elam, will undergo surgery this Monday, according to a Sirius radio interview with his former partner from GangStarr, Christopher Martin, better known as DJ Premier. The duo have been setting the tone in hip-hop since 1985.
Hip-hop website Ballerstatus.com grabbed some reactions from other popular rap artists via Twitter:
"When Worst Comes To Worst My Peoples Come First #PrayforGuru," Dilated Peoples' Evidence wrote (@MrEvidence)."All my greatest positive energy and prayers going to Guru and family... please get well," Jean Grae tweeted (@JeanGreasy).
"Praying 4 Guru...," commented Slaughterhouse member, Royce Da 5'9 (@RoyceDaFive9).
"my prayers go out to guru, ((((((prayers, love, meditation))))))," said Pharoahe Monch (@pharoahemonch).
Gang Starr has released six studio LPs and two greatest collections. Many of their albums are considered hip-hop classics. Guru has also created an iconic hip-hop sub-brand via his Jazzmatazz collection — a series of solo albums where Guru pairs with other jazz-related artists.
The last studio album GangStarr issued was Ownerz back in 2003. According to Encyclopedia.com, the best selling album the group has released since 1990 was Moment of Truth.
According to Clashmusic.com, Guru promised fans on his Twitter account that new Gangstarr material was set to emerge soon. However, in a subsequent posting DJ Premier's management denied that he was set to appear on the album.
