Interviews From The Edge: Catching Up With Korn's Ray Luzier
"I have a lot of music in me... but joining a band that's such a powerful force as Korn is a different entity. You can fill in for other bands, you can jump in and play eight years with David Lee Roth. A couple of years with Army of Anyone with Robert and Dean DeLeo (Stone Temple Pilots). As Mayhem Festival began winding down I had the opportunity to talk to Ray Luzier of Korn, the headlining band of Mayhem Festival 2010.
I was curious to find out how he was holding up after months with hardly a break from touring. Along with the release of their latest album Korn III: Remember Who You Are on July 13th, and the subsequent video release for the single "Oildale (Leave Me Alone)," Korn had been gearing up, and facing down, one of the hottest summers in recent memory.
Ray Luzier interview:
I had no idea what kind of mood I'd find on the other end when I picked up the phone to call his manager, but true to form they were both amped up and feeling good enough to tease me. "How long do we have?" That awful question that starts every one of my interviews. That's the point when the pen comes out and I start scratching off questions, only leaving the most important ones--and enough time to let the conversation flow without an agenda.
"Five minutes, we're running late, you'd better hurry! Hang up and call Ray!" I hung up and dialed his number. Ray picked up, "Four minutes and five seconds!" he said, trying not to laugh... and then I heard his evil twin giggle in the background. "Haha. Funny, guys." Ray really can't tease for long, he giggles... then in a guilty little boy voice. "Okay, sorry." I heard him say over his shoulder, "Man, you're getting me in trouble."
The heat index was well over one hundred when we settled in to talk but, as I had written previously, that didn't stop Ray from offering to meet me on the sidestage to see one of his favorite bands on the Mayhem tour, Norma Jean.
