War Horse

Truthfully, can a horse win a best actor award in the Oscars? If not, then “War Horse” will win, hands down, the best film of the year. Only Steven Spielberg could make a heart-rending film featuring the struggles of an extra-terrestrial. Only Steven Spielberg could make a touching film about saving a private during World War II. And finally, only Steven Spielberg could make a tear-jerking film about the life and death struggles of a horse.

Steven Spielberg insists that War Horse is "not one of my war movies." He says that the film is "about the way animals can actually connect people together." Spielberg says it was a conscious decision to not let Joey "think and speak." Moreover, having a voiceover was never an option - an absouletly perfect directing decision by Spielberg.

Yes, a horse is a horse, of course, of course, and no one can talk to a horse of course. That is, of course, unless the horse is the famous Mister Ed. Gratefully, this is not a sappy show about a talking horse. This is a heart-rending film about the struggles of a horse named Joey from his birth until the time he reaches horse-hood.

Several years before the outbreak of World War I, Joey's struggles begin at his birth as a colt in a grassy field in Devon, England. Eventually, Joey learns that he does not have freedom in the world in which he lives and he accepts his lot in life as a whipped, plow-horse. Joey eventually excels as a plow-horse beyond the wildest imaginations of even his lowly drunken Irish master.

After his master comes to ruin, Joey is sold once more to a new master who is a fool. Joey repeatedly escapes each and every new master he encounters in life. Each time he gains his freedom as a run-away, a new master captures him and claims Joey as their own property. As Joey's life progresses, he encounters cruel and barbaric men who torment him and also loving and kind youth who protect and nurture him.

During his journey, Joey befriends a comrade in horseshoes and learns what it means to sacrifice himself for another. Eventually, he reaches his horse-hood as he proves himself in the ultimate test of worldly strength, war. Scarred, beaten, and bloodied, Joey, the War Horse, discovers his final resting place in this life.

This epic film is well-worth the time and energy investment of everyone who watches “War Horse.”
