Tattooed Love Boys: Jesse James vs. Lost's James "Sawyer" Ford
As the Jesse James mistress carnival of (w)horrors continues to roll through town (we're up to four women now) many people are wondering what Sandra ever saw in him.
Even worse, based on James' obvious sexual type, what did he see in her (besides $$$$). That's not to disparage Ms. Bullock, who is awesome by all accounts, but clearly not James' "type": too classy, too beautiful, and far too few tattoos.
So what's the attraction for Ms. Bullock and any woman who seeks out the macho, brooding bad boy? Since we don't really know Jesse James — and at this point, who can say they do — then we have to merely speculate. Or better yet, we can compare him to an archetype of a well-known bad boy. Here's where the character Sawyer, from the hit show Lost, comes in.
Played by Josh Holloway, Lost's Sawyer is a 'confidence man' with a troubled past. He plays women, steals their money, leaves them brokenhearted and wanting for more punishment. His brooding seems sexy, his anger belies vulnerability and for the women who fall for him, he pushes them away as soon as love becomes an issue, (well at least until he makes it to the island, but let's stay on course here).
James Ford's troubled past comes from having witnessed his father kill his mother, then kill himself, after discovering she cheated on him with a con-man named Sawyer, who also swindled them out of their life savings.
Witnessing this causes James Ford to become "Sawyer," taking on the persona of the man who ripped his family apart in a bid for revenge. The Sawyer character on Lost is multi-faceted: he can be extremely selfless and heroic, but can also be starkly selfish and contrary. He slips between these extremes in a seamless and unpredictable manner.
Entering stage right is any woman with a savior complex, all of whom suffer from a certain amount of masochism. It's like the stray dog that won't go away no matter how many times you yell at it, throw things at it, or kick it: it just keeps coming back for more.
