Bristol Palin, Levi Johnston, son Tripp

Us Magazine's cover story this week features engagement news for unwed mom Bristol Palin, the 19-year old daughter of GOP darling Sarah Palin.

Who is Bristol marrying?  Her ex and baby-daddy to son Tripp, Levi Johnston, age 20.  Yes, the same Levi Johnston who was dragged out onto the campaign trail during Sarah Palin and John McCain's bid for the presidency in 2008.  The same Levi Johnston who threatened to spill all the dirty little secrets of the Palin family.  The same Levi Johnston who posed for Playboy (without showing the full monty, mind you).  The same Levi Johnston whose mother was arrested on drug charges.  The same Levi Johnston who waged a smear campaign against his fiancee and her family. The same Levi Johnston...oh you get the picture.

Apparently, Bristol and Levi rekindled their romance while meeting to discuss custody arrangements of their 18-month old son, and then became engaged two weeks ago.  Bristol stated during the interview with the tabloid that they didn't have the approval of her parents, but hoped her mom would "jump on board."  Oh, I bet she jumped alright.  In fact, the family released a very interestingly worded statement on the engagement:

"Bristol, at 19, is now a young adult. As parents we obviously want what is best for our children, but Bristol is ultimately in charge of determining what is best for her and her beautiful son.

"Bristol believes in redemption and forgiveness to a degree most of us struggle to put in practice in our daily lives."

"We pray that, as a couple, Bristol and Levi's relationship matures into one that will allow Tripp to grow up graced with two loving parents in his life."

How this is all going to work is beyond me.  It would seem, from my estimation, that Levi has betrayed every level of trust necessary to form a healthy relationship with Bristol's family, but hey, apparently she has tremendous depths of forgiveness, so let's hope it runs in the family.

In truth, I hope they do make it work.  Little Tripp deserves a normal family and since that's not possible, the least he should get out of this raw deal is a mom AND a dad.  Good luck, you two crazy kids.
