Why Having Pride in Your Business is a Good Thing
Pride is one of those traits we’re told not to indulge in overly much. That it’s not good to be “full of ourselves.” I’d like to say that it’s perfectly okay to take pride in your business and that you actually need to in order to be successful.
The definitions for pride I found that work:
• a feeling of self-respect and personal worth
• satisfaction with your achievements
• the trait of being spurred on by a dislike of falling below your standards
• be proud of; "He prides himself on making it into law school"
Let’s say you are a small business owner. You have a home-based business. One of the key attributes for success in this type of endeavor is belief in what you are doing. Have you considered that everything you need to grow a successful business can be found inside yourself? You’ll need belief in (1) your idea, (2) your goals and milestones, (3) your dreams, and certainly (4) your company and product/service. Pride in this case is your feeling of self-respect and personal worth as translated through your business.
Pride in having satisfaction with your achievements is appropriate for a small business owner. When sales are up and current customers are referring new business you know that your daily business efforts are paying off. You can feel good about this. You can take pride in doing what works.
Feeling pride in your business by disliking falling below your standards is rather convoluted, but another way to express pride. A solo-owner, home-based business by definition means that one person sets up the standards by which the business operates. You have decided:
• When you work: are you a part-time business, working 20 hours a week? Or, have you decided to be a fulltime business, working 5-days a week? Is your business accessible on the internet giving your business a 24-7 visibility? Do you have a website from which products can be purchased?
