Social Media Goal Setting for Small Business
Today we're looking at how much time you, as a small business owner, should be planning to devote to social media.
We've already talked about where to start - the Golden Trio. But we haven't covered a lot of detail about how to start.
For complete, step-by-step, illustrated instructions to set up profiles in Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter, you can go to My Social Media Directory. This is book excerpt I mentioned in my first Technorati post.
Because I'm an author and copywriter, the amount of time I spend on social media each day is significant. You'll be happy to know your time commitment can be as little as 20 minutes each day.
Let's keep using the example of a hardware store. This is a good example, because most of us probably think a hardware store has as little to do with the Internet as possible. After all, you're not going to ship a little package of nuts and bolts across the country or even to the next town, right?
And this is the powerful part of social media that so many business owners miss out on.
Yes, you can use the Internet and social media to contact people on the other side of the planet. You can also use it to contact the purchasing manager of that big chemical plant (or any other corporation) just outside town.
You might also use it to find home-based business owners right in town.
The only way to contact either one is to spend some time looking for them.
So let's start from the beginning. You've set up profiles on the Golden Trio, and you're ready to set some goals. Let's set two goals:
1. increase customer traffic by 10%, and
2. get one new "company customer" each month.
A "company customer" is someone like the purchasing manager at the chemical plant, a tradesman or anyone else buying for their business.
To increase customer traffic by 10%, you need to show people living in your town that you have something they want. Because it's a hardware store, you have lots of seasonal items and a steady stock of everyday items. You know there's something in your store for everyone.
