Disney Bans Employee Head Scarf

A Muslim employee for Disney has been told she can not wear her head scarf because she is a hostess. The squabble is quite the news story and there are two definitive sides to it.

One one side, the employee feels that she should be able to wear her head scarf because it's part of her religion. She feels that it's her religious belief to wear the scarf and she shouldn't be told to take it while working.

From the Disney perspective, because the employee is a "stage" character — which really means that she interacts with customers — she should have to follow the employee dress code. And, as you guessed it, the head scarf isn't part of the dress code.

Who's in the right here? Scarf or no scarf?

I would normally tend to side with the employee on this issue because religious freedom was part of the reason this country was founded. On the other hand, companies have employee handbooks and policies to govern then and ensure consistency.

It's really a no win situation for Disney. If they stick to their guns, they are going to get crucified by the media, Muslims and other supporters. However, if they let the employee wear the scarf, they are ignoring their own rules and what's to say someone else won't try and go against the grain?

The kicker here is that Disney offered to design the employee her own head scarf but she refused.

So I ask you this, is the employee really sticking to her religious beliefs or is she looking for a bigger payout?
